Canyon Lake, TX to Austin - 1st timer help

Husband %26amp; I (early 30%26#39;s) have 1 free week at the Silverleaf Hill Country Resort in Canyon Lake, TX. We%26#39;ve never been to the area and would love any trip itinerary recommendations.

This is what we would like to do for the week Sat-Sat, likely in Oct or Nov when the heat goes down a bit:

- visit San Antonio (fly in here? How far is the drive to Canyon Lake?)

- visit Austin %26amp; surrounding neighborhoods for a future potential move in 2-3 years. Looking for newer ranch homes under $150k, and want to drive around to get a feel for the area, city %26amp; things to do. Should we contact a real estate agent to tour us around, or is it easy enough to do on our own? recommended towns to visit?

- we like outdoor fests, live music, unique things to see (i.e. Caverns or Bats)

- we are casual people, and enjoy eating %26amp; drinking outdoors (i.e. riverwalk?)

- looking for cheaper things to do, not fancy restaurants or theater or museums.

How far is the drive from the resort to each San Antonio and Austin? Thank you for any info you can offer us!

I%26#39;d also consider posting this on the San Antonio forum, although octoboy usually takes a look here. If you are in Canyon Lake, one of the easiest fun areas to visit is Gruene - for music and fun. As far as a potential move to Austin, unless you know the area that you will be working in I wouldn%26#39;t go house shopping just yet. In your range you would probably be on the outskirts and would want to find something that is not a nightmare of a commute.

Depending on when you are visiting, the Austin City Limits Music festival may be going on (or a UT football game) and that would impact a visit to Austin - probably not in a positive way. It gets pretty busy in Austin those weekends.

Thanks for the info. Actually, my husband can work from home anywhere, and I will be a stay at home mom by then, so we don%26#39;t need to worry about finding jobs %26amp; housing close to work!

That said, can you recommend some towns to check out?

As far as your possible move to Austin - for newer homes around 150K and under, you might want to check out the Round Rock area, nice suburb north of Austin - good schools, shopping, etc. My wife and I looked around quite a bit years ago and thought that Round Rock provided the best option (before we decided to move to the Dallas area). You could check out Pflugerville, Kyle and Budah but the schools are not as good there and, overall, just not as charming as Round Rock.

If you care about being near the airport you may want to keep an eye on the area just north of the airport on the new toll road. There%26#39;s not much out there now but I bet in 2 to 3 years they will be building new homes, shopping centers, etc around there and it would be a very convenient location to airport, downtown, etc.
