best places for live music downtown?

I%26#39;m in town next week for a conference at the Hyatt Regency Austin. I%26#39;ll be there thru Sunday w/o a car. What%26#39;s within walking distance, that isn%26#39;t 6th St., that%26#39;s a great place for hearing live music?

I%26#39;m looking for places to go Fri. night, Sat afternoon and evening and early Sun. afternoon.

Thanks!

Hello -

Here%26#39;s a couple of venues you can check out

My first thought is the Elephant Room (walking distance): www.elephantroom.com

SpeakEasy (walking distance): www.speakeasyaustin.com

A very short/cheap cab ride away would be the Saxon Pub: www.thesaxonpub.com

short can ride: Stubb%26#39;s: http://www.stubbsaustin.com/music_home.html

That being said, I%26#39;m not sure what type of music you like so maybe you could tell us so we can point you in the right direction.

MrTed will be able to list some more optionsm for you

I like classic rock, folk of the singer / songwriter variety, some country, about everything except hip-hop and disco dance music.

My husband is very much into hearing original music.

From the Hyatt, you are close to the Continental Club and South Congress. You%26#39;ll find music all over on the weekends. Not sure why you aren%26#39;t interested in 6th St, we%26#39;re in our late 40s and always find something we enjoy when we go down there. With UT out for the summer it%26#39;s not as crazy and there is a variety of music to be heard. That said, take a look at the Austin Chronicle music calendar and you can get an idea of what%26#39;s in town next week. austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/…MusicListings

Try to get by the Austin Visitor%26#39;s Center at 209 E. 6th for the visitor%26#39;s guide and free maps. Don%26#39;t forget that prices of anything in Austin, especially cabs will be substantially below Chicago prices! A nice thing to encounter.

Definitely check out www.austinchronicle.com/

for the alternative newspaper that comes out on Thursdays. It does a good job of listing the clubs, their genre and who%26#39;s playing on specific nights.

I%26#39;ll also suggest the Cactus Cafe on the UT campus for acoustic music, especially of the singer/songwriter variety.It%26#39;s a very short cab ride. For country, it%26#39;s always fun to recommend the Broken Spoke. It%26#39;s one of the last true honky tonks and is a short cab ride from down town. Occasionally even Willie Nelson shows up here.

There%26#39;s an assortment of music at both the Continental Club on S. Congress and Antone%26#39;s. Both of those clubs are among the most popular in town. Continental Club is an easy walk from the Hyatt and Antone%26#39;s is walkable. I%26#39;d cab home from it.

Welcome to Austin!

I%26#39;ll be hitting 6th St. early with people from the conference. Since Austin has such a reputation for being a great live music town, I want to hear some of the other venues, maybe some place that attracks more of the local crowd.
